Surviving University on a Budget

Entering university opens new doors and provides an exciting path towards adulthood. It is a time when students learn to become more independent and take control of their lives, including living on a budget.

For most kids, food was something taken for granted before university life, since parents would always have it prepared for them. Therefore feeding oneself, as well as cooking, may seem a huge task for many college students. Eating out is an option, but that will quickly empty the cash register, so eating on a budget is essential.

To survive university on a budget, you must take time to discover where to purchase the cheapest basic food supplies, for example bread, beans and margarine. Another useful suggestion is to look for generic products, which are cheaper than brand names; many supermarket “own brand” products are inexpensive yet just as good as the branded versions. Be on the lookout for “special offers” at local stores and stock up them.

Another tip is to buy only the essentials, such as pans, plates, cutlery and other important tools for the kitchen. Such basic necessities are well within a student’s budget. It is also advisable to keep a stock of basic food supplies, such as rice, pasta, milk, seasonings and some vegetables. This will enable you to prepare simple meals at any time.

After stocking up with all the basic foods and utensils, the next most important tip is to buy a good cookbook. Look for ones that have easy to make dishes suitable for a busy student. Another tip is to take advantage of meals that may be included in with the accommodation, as this can also help reduce costs and make your budget stretch a little further.
