Setting Up Your Own Business

Who would have thought that an investment in a $25 pinball machine would result in a $62-billion net worth? Warren Buffett is a classic story of rags to riches fame.

The biggest businesses and corporations did not spring up overnight and most of the powerful business tycoons in the world today have used a one step at a time approach to reach the peak of their business success.

Having an adequate amount of capital is not the only foundation of a stable business. Just as important are preparedness and a strong commitment, the main keys to accomplishing an entrepreneurial goal.

Warren Buffett began focusing his attention on his business ventures when he was only 14 years old. Having bought a small farm, he continued working away until he founded his own investment firm that eventually flourished. Like Buffet, anyone who decides to set up their own business should be a self-starter, with the ability to come up with an initiative and develop their own concepts.

Personal commitment is something you should have in abundance when planning a business. Hard work, uncertainties and physical and emotional demands are all present when setting up your own business venture. Business endeavours require personal sacrifice and along with that, the reality of starting a business is that it involves giving up some of your personal spending in order to provide financial stability. Starting a business may be risky and may lead to the owner losing all their money, including their own personal property.

Individuals who truly have the will to start their own business should therefore be self-confident and have a passion for their products and services, while enthusiasm earns trust and confidence. It is also wise to be open to criticism and be prepared to listen to the advice of other people, whilst maintaining your own business objectives.

Such personal traits may not, by themselves, be enough to motivate you to start a business venture. There are other essential core skills that you should master before striking off alone. First, you should have the ability to manage your own finances. This means being able to understand cash flow planning and credit management. It is also essential to keep a good relationship with your bank and accountant.

Product development is another important skill you must learn. A business owner should have the ability to foresee long-term goals for product development and identify the materials, processes and people needed to achieve these goals.

In addition, people management is integral to a business’s longevity. This involves a mixture of staff motivation, recruitment management and training management.

Marketing skills are equally important, because a healthy marketing approach helps in establishing and understanding solid sales and marketing operations, not to mention identifying selling points for current and future products.

Finally, a business cannot survive without sales, so the owner has to identify potential customers and their respective needs. Effectively introducing and explaining the kind of products and services available to these potential customers will help turn them into regular clients.

Equip yourself with the right knowledge and skills and you’ll be headed on the right track.
